Contemporary theory has evolved along with these advances in compositional style, and serves as an integral part of appreciating and comprehending contemporary repertoire. However, increases in compositional complexity have resulted in a complicated, time-consuming, and tedious analytical process.
Fortunately, the speed and power of modern computers holds incredible potential for automating many basic analytical tasks. I am working on software that essentially serves as a 'music theory calculator.' My hope is to use this software to allow for empirical testing and exploration of ideas set forth by music theorists." section['work_marimba'] = "Can visual information play a role in what is ostensibly and auditory art-form?
Even though music is an auditory phenomena based on sound, human perception of sound is in fact affected by extra-acoustic factors such as visual information. I have shown that expert performers strategically use gestures to overcome acoustic limitations of the marimba, allowing for control over audience perception even in the absence of control over acoustic information.

section['work_happyXylophone'] = "Composers often communicate emotions in music by mimicking non-semantic cues for emotional messages. Therefore instruments unable to mimic certain cues should not be effective at communicating corresponding emotions. Because the xylophone is unable to produce the acoustic cues for sadness, it follows that composers should avoid writing sad music for it.
A survey of its repertoire indicates that (1) in comparison its closest acoustic cousin (the marimba), music written for the xylophone is overwhelmingly 'happy,' and (2) that instances in which composers experiment with attempts to write sad xylophone music are often met with hostility by performers, who do not feel that the xylophone is an appropriate instrument for conveying such emotions." section['work_toneEnvelope'] = "Tone envelope refers to a sound's shape over time. Many electronic devices such as phones, PDAs, ATMs, etc. use envelopes that I believe are not optimally processed by the perceptual system.
Some of my recent research shows that sounds with percussive envelopes are not only more pleasant, but offer significant perceptual and cognitive benefits. Specifically, they integrate more easily with relevant visual information, and sequences of percussive tones are easier to associate with other objects.
Together, these results suggest that their processing is in some way privileged, and that electronic devices could be improved by adopting more perceptually-optimal sounds." section['work_rhythmMotion'] = "Performing musicians have long recognized the benefits of moving while playing, as such motion helps to synchronize different performers, maintain steady time, and enhance audience enjoyment.
This ongoing project will explore the perceptual and cognitive benefits of 'grooving to the beat.'
